8.22.26: Poem Untitled 2 #39

To a steadfast love, always thinking of me,
depositing incremental amounts
of Him, arriving throughout my story,
and making short work of what really counts.

This is my voice, and I feed on my words,
tied, somehow, to future generations,
if only in spirit, alone. Little birds,
hence, drive the puck; I speak with the sun,

looking over your shoulder, from the far side.
Accept, now, the peace that you deny,
seeing flaws in what, now, you would abide,
if, for example, true love was nigh,

a physical presence to validate
your worth—when, lo, it’s all self-evident;
I ask for help with my faith, to date,
and the reason to make it what it’s meant

to be—a self-affirming philosophy—
backed up, in part, by my observations,
how the world is, and what it must be.
I give in, a little, to His creations—

this is the help that I was asking for.
To believe in others, and in the show
they create, becoming what I adore,
given the time, ahead, that He’ll bestow

if i continue to listen for His voice,
a thread from here to the time I resign,
learning to be glad, choosing to rejoice,
allowing others their moment to shine.

So, gradually, what would seem to blow,
i see, now, is a function of belief—
faith in God, and the giving, that I know,
though, at times, i might feel no relief.

It’s all a matter of choosing my attitude.
I can see the bad—that I can’t control,
or I can forgive every fortitude
that protects me from what I can’t console—

the desire, at once, for perfection.
I know, dear heart, that is the life: and yet
i seem, in agony, to protest, for the fun
I discover is all in what I would beget,

if, somehow, I could become more like Him.
But I can’t—he’s an idea, above me,
and i can’t go any faster. The lights dim
when we go down in history,

and people, overall, see the best in us.
But the bad, i think, at some untold point,
was really there—making us what we suss
when we believe in the love we appoint—

good people, in general, that exist
for each other, serving each other,
and the forces that drive us to persist,
when our cup, and our faith, are astir.
